WEEKEND MEMORIES

City-dwellers know very well that summer weekends in the boroughs are, well, empty! Everyone jets off to the Hamptons, Fire Island, Amagansett (I can keep going ;)) to get away from the hustle and bustle and wind down by the pool and beach with the summer weather beautifully in check. “Summer Fridays” are a very real thing here in the Big Apple and, like clockwork, the City quiets down from Friday to Sunday beginning as early as Memorial Day and ending around the Labor Day long weekend. Our Dekel crew often takes advantage of these quiet City weekends to explore BK, get the best brunch reservations in town, and experience City relaxation in a refreshingly quieter light.

That being said, we always try to take a weekend or two away with our kids out on Long Island or upstate, for a well-deserved change of scenery and much-needed recharge. As you may have seen on Instagram, we spent this past weekend upstate in Hudson. The endless fields of green, the enticing pool all to ourselves, delicious food at every meal – not to mention the freshest of air and abounding floral beauty – made for one of the best weekends yet that we’ve had as a family. On the way here we stopped to buy strawberry jam, 2 kinds of bread, cherries and fresh eggs at one of the local farms. Our favorite was the banana bread! As I’m back home writing this post (and already reminiscing about the weekend…that was yesterday!), I begin to think about how important it is for adults to take time off from the busy-ness that is life and learn to reconnect with nature, family and friends, and all aspects of the wondrous world around us. While it goes without saying that it was much easier than usual to relax in the setting of breathtaking Hudson, I realize more than ever that it is critical to discover ways to step back and connect with my surroundings (be it my husband, children, friends, and most importantly myself) even right here in busy Brooklyn.
